  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder 🌿
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder 🌶️
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder 🌿
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala 🌿
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or vegetable oil 🌿
  • Salt, to taste 🧂
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped, for garnishing 🌿
  • Lemon wedges, for serving 🍋

Instructions:

  1. Drain the soaked lentils and transfer them to a pressure cooker or a pot. Add 3 cups of water, salt, and turmeric powder. Cook until the lentils are soft and mushy.
  2. In a separate pan, heat ghee or vegetable oil over medium heat.
  3. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds to the hot oil. Let them splutter.
  4. Add finely chopped onions to the pan and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  5. Stir in ginger-garlic paste and slit green chilies. Sauté for a minute until the raw aroma disappears.
  6. Add chopped tomatoes to the pan and cook until they are soft and mushy.
  7. Add red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala to the pan. Mix well and cook the masala until the oil starts to separate from the sides.
  8. Pour the cooked lentils (dal) into the pan and mix well with the prepared masala. Adjust the consistency of the dal by adding water if needed.
  9. Let the dal simmer for 5-7 minutes on low heat to allow the flavors to blend together.
  10. Garnish the dal tadka with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
  11. Serve the aromatic and flavorful dal tadka hot with steamed rice or roti.
  12. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice over the dal tadka just before serving for an extra tangy flavor.
