Dal Tadka Recipe 🍽️
Ingredients:
- 1 cup yellow lentils (moong dal or toor dal), washed and soaked for 30 minutes 🌱
- 1 onion, finely chopped 🧅
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped 🍅
- 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise 🌶️
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste 🧄
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 🌿
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds 🌿
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder 🌿
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder 🌶️
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder 🌿
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala 🌿
- 2 tablespoons ghee or vegetable oil 🌿
- Salt, to taste 🧂
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped, for garnishing 🌿
- Lemon wedges, for serving 🍋
Instructions:
- Drain the soaked lentils and transfer them to a pressure cooker or a pot. Add 3 cups of water, salt, and turmeric powder. Cook until the lentils are soft and mushy.
- In a separate pan, heat ghee or vegetable oil over medium heat.
- Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds to the hot oil. Let them splutter.
- Add finely chopped onions to the pan and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Stir in ginger-garlic paste and slit green chilies. Sauté for a minute until the raw aroma disappears.
- Add chopped tomatoes to the pan and cook until they are soft and mushy.
- Add red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala to the pan. Mix well and cook the masala until the oil starts to separate from the sides.
- Pour the cooked lentils (dal) into the pan and mix well with the prepared masala. Adjust the consistency of the dal by adding water if needed.
- Let the dal simmer for 5-7 minutes on low heat to allow the flavors to blend together.
- Garnish the dal tadka with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
- Serve the aromatic and flavorful dal tadka hot with steamed rice or roti.
- Squeeze some fresh lemon juice over the dal tadka just before serving for an extra tangy flavor.
