Pennsylvania Dutch Chicken Pot Pie Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces 🍗
- 2 cups all-purpose flour 🌾
- 1/2 teaspoon salt 🧂
- 1/4 cup shortening or butter 🧈
- 1/2 cup water 💧
- 2 onions, chopped 🧅
- 4 carrots, sliced 🥕
- 4 celery stalks, sliced 🥬
- 2 potatoes, peeled and diced 🥔
- Salt and pepper, to taste 🧂🌶️
- 6 cups chicken broth 🍲
Instructions:
- In a large pot, bring the chicken pieces and chicken broth to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until the chicken is cooked through, about 45 minutes.
- Remove the chicken from the pot and let it cool. Once cool enough to handle, shred the chicken meat and set aside. Strain the chicken broth and set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the shortening or butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add water, tossing with a fork until a ball forms.
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into squares or rectangles.
- Return the strained chicken broth to the pot and bring to a boil. Add the onions, carrots, celery, and potatoes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Add the rolled dough pieces to the boiling broth, stirring gently to prevent sticking.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 30 minutes or until the vegetables are tender and the dough is cooked through.
- Stir in the shredded chicken and simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes until heated through.
- Serve the Pennsylvania Dutch Chicken Pot Pie hot, ladled into bowls with plenty of broth and vegetables.

Pennsylvania Dutch Chicken Pot Pie is cherished for its simplicity, warmth, and ability to bring people together around the dining table.
